Hij kwam voor het eerst in aanraking met de kracht van muziek dankzij zijn grootmoeder, een pianolerares in zijn geboortedorpje in Louisiana. In haar platencollectie ontdekte hij artiesten als Otis Redding, Al Green en Aretha Franklin. Hij ontwikkelde vervolgens zijn eigen stijl, wat resulteerde in deze band die in een adem wordt genoemd met groepen als St. Paul &amp; The Broken Bones, Alabama Shakes en The Marcus King Band.
